Facelift
in Middletown, NJ

Age and weight loss can cause the skin on our faces to sag and become loose. Dr. John Taylor is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs facelifts on patients in Red Bank, NJ, who want to look and feel younger with a more refreshed appearance.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck, signs that greatly impact how we feel about ourselves and how others see us. Sagging in the mid-face can create hollowing below the eyes (called tear troughs) and deep creases between the nose and mouth (the nasolabial folds), making a person appear tired and sad. Fat in the face that has fallen as well as loss of muscle tone in the lower face can create jowls (lines that sag into the neck). Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin create the dreaded “double chin” or “turkey-gobbler” neck.

Benefits of a Facelift

Facelifts allow patients to correct the aesthetic issues associated with aging and dramatic weight loss and offer the following benefits:

  • Provides a more youthful and rested appearance
  • Uplifts contours
  • Improves facial tone
  • Restores a positive self-image

Patient Reviews

“I had my first appointment at Allure last week with Danielle. I frequently have shoulder/neck/back pain as a result of working from home and slouching. In the hour Danielle worked on me I was COMPLETELY transformed. She relieved so much tension and pain, and gave me helpful stretches to do before my next appointment. Danielle is AMAZING — pre- or post-op, or for general massage therapy. I will never see anyone else for body work again! Thank you, Danielle and the Allure team!”

How Is a Facelift Performed?

Dr. Taylor performs facelifts in fully accredited hospitals and surgical facilities under general anesthesia. The time needed for this procedure is highly individualized, but usually takes 6-8 hours. The patient’s goals, anatomy, and Dr. Taylor’s surgical judgment are all factors in determining the best approach to the surgery. Incisions often begin in the hairline of the temples, continue around the ear and end in the lower scalp. Fat may be redistributed as the underlying tissue is repositioned. Endotines, small dissolvable implants, anchor and support the lifted tissue. Skin is redraped over the uplifted contours, and excess skin is trimmed away. Another incision under the chin may be necessary to further improve an aging neck, and liposuction may be utilized here as well. Sutures close the incisions and dressings are applied. A bandage is gently placed around the face to minimize swelling and bruising. A thin tube is placed under the skin temporarily to drain excess blood and fluid.

Preparing for a Facelift

Because it is considered major surgery, it is necessary to take several steps in preparing for a facelift. In addition to following a set of instructions provided by Dr. Taylor and his staff, you may be asked for the following:

  • Undergo pre-operative testing
  • See your physician for medical clearance
  • Adjust or discontinue current medications
  • Take certain medications
  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain herbal supplements that may thin your blood.
  • Make travel arrangements for someone to drive you to and from surgery
  • Arrange for someone to stay with you the first night following surgery

Recovery from a Facelift

Initial healing may include swelling, numbness, and discomfort, which is controlled with prescribed oral medication. Antibiotics are taken to prevent infection. An itchy scalp, particularly at incision sites, is also common. Some facial movements may be restricted or temporarily impaired. Dr. Taylor recommends that the head be kept elevated at all times until initial swelling has subsided. Light, normal activity may be resumed in about one week and patients usually return to work within 2-4 weeks. Cosmetics can usually camouflage any bruising that remains. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling resolves and incision lines fade. Sunscreen should be used until the healing process is fully complete. It may take several months for swelling to fully resolve and incision lines to mature. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help extend the resultant youthful, rejuvenated appearance.
