Board-certified Red Bank plastic surgeon Dr. John Taylor performs breast augmentation for area residents who want to increase the size of their breasts, giving them a shapelier figure.

What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that allows women to have fuller breasts, creating a more balanced figure. It involves placing breast implants to increase the fullness along with the prominence of breasts. It may also help improve evenness by restoring breast volume lost following pregnancy or a dramatic weight loss or by making breasts unequal in size more even. Additionally, breast augmentation is often performed on patients who have lost one or both breasts due to a mastectomy or injury.

How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?
The procedure for breast augmentation involves making an incision in one of three places depending on each patient. The more popular incision is an inframammary incision which is done above the crease under the breast and leaves much less visible scarring. Another incision used is periareolar or around the nipple area while the last (and least popular) place for the incision is in the armpit.
Once the incision is made, a pocket is created either directly behind the breast tissue or beneath the muscle where the implant is placed. The implant is made of a silicone shell filled with sterile saline or cohesive gel. Following the placement, the incision is closed and stitched.
Breast surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes approximately 2 hours. It is performed on an outpatient basis, so you will be able to go home the same day.
Preparing for Breast Augmentation
The first step in preparing for breast augmentation is to select the right size and shape implant for the procedure, which Dr. Taylor and his knowledgeable staff will help guide you through. Once that decision is made, the next steps may involve:
- Undergo pre-operative testing
- See your physician for medical clearance
- Adjust or discontinue current medications
- Take certain medications
- Stop smoking
- Avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain herbal supplements that may thin your blood.
- Make travel arrangements for someone to drive you to and from surgery
- Arrange for someone to stay with you the first night following surgery
Recovery from Breast Augmentation
Results are immediately visible, and breasts may feel tight at first as the skin adjusts to the new breast size. A support bra is worn to help support and position the breasts. Post-surgical swelling and increased breast sensitivity will resolve in a few weeks, and incision lines will refine. Oral pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed. Although the recovery time is unique to each patient, most patients find they can return to work a few days after surgery. Nonetheless, strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks.
