How Is Ear Lobe Repair Performed?
A local anesthetic is injected to numb the ear lobe; some excess skin is excised, repositioned, and closed with sutures. You may have inner stitches followed by sutures on the surface of the ear lobe. It is a quick and easy procedure that takes only about 30 minutes to complete.
Preparing for Ear Lobe Repair
Significant preoperative workup is not necessary for your ear lobe repair procedure since sedation and anesthesia are not used. You will be given a list of medications, vitamins, and supplements to stop taking one to two weeks pre and post surgery. Smoking should also be refrained from before and after surgery.
Recovery from Ear Lobe Repair
In the first few days, you may have some mild discomfort, but that is easily remedied with an over-the-counter pain reliever. Patients are asked to keep the area clean and moist with antibiotic ointment, and sutures are removed in the office in about 10 days. If you have inner stitches, they simply dissolve on their own. Full recovery takes only about a month and results in ear lobes that look as if there has been no trauma to them. Patients who wish to have their ears re-pierced are asked to bring stainless steel earrings (post, not hoop) to their appointment.
