How Is Liposuction Performed?
Liposuction is performed in a fully accredited hospital or surgical facility under general anesthesia through small incisions that are hidden in inconspicuous areas. After a tumescent fluid is injected, a thin cannula is used to loosen excess fat which is then removed using power assisted liposuction.
This procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis. Although this generally takes 1 to 2 hours to perform, the amount of time needed for the procedure will vary due to the amount of fat being removed and the size of the area being treated.
Preparing for Liposuction
Preparing for liposuction involves a pre-operative appointment to ensure your overall health is good. It may also be necessary to do the following:
- Undergo pre-operative testing
- See your physician for medical clearance
- Adjust or discontinue current medications
- Take certain medications
- Stop smoking
- Avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain herbal supplements that may thin your blood.
- Make travel arrangements for someone to drive you to and from surgery
- Arrange for someone to stay with you the first night following surgery
Recovery from Liposuction
After surgery, initial healing will include swelling, numbness, soreness, and bruising. Prescribed oral medication helps control any discomfort. A compression garment is worn to control swelling and to compress the skin to the new body contours. Patients should walk as soon as possible to help prevent blood clots in the legs. Most of the swelling resolves within three weeks although some swelling and skin laxity can persist for up to six months. The recovery time varies for each patient, but most patients can return to work within a few days after surgery. Strenuous activity should be avoided for up to one month.
